my new work toy

this very lightweight mini-laptop was delivered today. sally and i both got one. we had been tossing around the idea of creating a "crisis bag" to hold everything we would need for emergencies at the College. the idea being is that we could leave our office with it at a moments notice. we had been planning on getting (full-size) laptops, but when we came across the eee, we realized that it had everything we needed in a more compact package, and at a much cheaper cost.

just starting playing with it, but i will let you know how it goes. it's wireless and has a built-in webcam that could be useful. i'll definitely be bringing this little guy to meetings and conferences (more room to pack shoes). it will fit in most of my pocketbooks without any trouble.

on a hump day afternoon

yesterday was beautiful out (comparatively, it has been raining the rest of the week), so i decided to take my half day and visit grandma who is down the cape for the week. i really wanted to go to chatham and shop. jim and i used to go there sometimes, and i always liked it.

as it was a wednesday afternoon, traffic was obviously not that bad. so i made it in an hour, which is reasonable enough for an afternoon fake vacation. it was really nice to get away, though i was tempted to stay through the weekend.

so if you are thinking of going out to the cape, here are a few places in chatham that i love to frequent.

yankee ingenuity
artful hand gallery (also at copley place)
song of ireland (a little ways out of the main villange, but still on the main road)

if you're looking for good food and cold beer, head to the squire. word to the wise, if you are looking for sandwiches and burgers, make sure you sit on the tavern side, they don't serve their bar menu in the dining room.

officially official

in my lack of blogging, i forgot to mention that i am now an official employee at bristol community college.

when i moved back last year i worked as a consultant for the communications department for their emergency planning. when the director of college communication left for a position elsewhere, they asked me to come on in an acting capacity. five months later, i applied for the position, went through the search process, and was offered a job.

so i am now officially doing the job i have been doing since november. my job title has changed to media specialist and i got a nice raise. i'm really happy with everything on the work front and hopefully the people i work with/for will be pleased as well.

oh, boston you're my home

"...the first six game sweep in the history of the nba finals..."

"TUESDAY'S BEST -- Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen: The trio began the season known as GPA, the Boston three party and the big three. They end the season known as world champs."

When you took Paul, Kevin and Ray out of the game with 4:01 remaining, could you sort of talk about that? Was that something you had planned all along? Was it an impromptu decision? How did that play out? Well, I thought about it a minute before that, and I just thought they came in as a group, and I thought we should take them out as a group. So I did think about it right before I did it.

You know, I refused to allow [team officials] to give me any plans. They all wanted to sit me down and talk about parade plans, and I told them I didn't want to hear about it. I didn't want to talk about it. So really I was unprepared for anything at the end of the game.

It's probably sweeter that way.

And when they came off, what was said? Just we loved each other. They all said "thank you," and I said "thank you" back. Paul, obviously we ... it's just so sweet. He just kept saying "thank you, thank you, thank you for sticking with me again," and I kept saying the same thing to him.

So it was really a nice moment."

"No smoking laws were waived in the New Garden when NBA commissioner David Stern presented the Larry O'Brien Trophy to Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck at 12:03 this morning.

"Someplace, Red is lighting up a cigar," said Stern.

"This win is for Red Auerbach," said Grousbeck."

"They are not your old man's Celtics. No black canvas high-tops. No cigar smoke wafting toward the Garden rafters from the Boston bench. No behind-the-back passes from Cooz, and no Larry Legend smashing his face on the parquet floor. But the 2007-08 Boston Celtics are champions of the world, worthy successors to the men your dad always told you about."

"I trailed Pierce as he left the locker room and made the walk to the postgame interview area, the unmistakable scent of champagne emanating from his soaked jersey and cap.

But that's not the smell I'll forever associate this night with.

Instead, it's the smell of a cigar -- the source of which I'll never truly know, even though a part of me will always suspect it came from an area just above the Celtics' end of the court, right where Red Auerbach's spirit was floating."

running away

my running partner (carey) and i have been going for a run before work. the past few weeks have been all about trying to get back in the habit of running (neither of us are big fans), but the loop that we run (a throwback to my field hockey days) is getting boring and perhaps a bit too easy (go us!).

i've been looking for some new routes to take, and thought i would share with you a resource that i use. map my run uses google maps to help you measure distances, and has a lot of great features that i haven't got around to using. but definitely an interesting link!
